Consistently Through Variation

The hand, the eye, the brain, the heart, the brush lay color onto the canvas.
They fix the identity of that mark.
The atoms of color and fabric embrace in a new life.
Endless movement, photons of light enter that mark and emerge colored.
The spaces of silence between one mark and another shape becoming, just as in music.

-
Giorgio Griffa’s seventh solo exhibition at Casey Kaplan Gallery in New York presents more than twenty works spanning nearly sixty years (from 1969 to 2025), offering an incisive overview of the artist’s ongoing reflection on the painting process—one that continually renews itself through ever-changing variations, from the early Primary Signs series to the most recent canvases of the Disorder cycle.

The exhibition highlights, on the one hand, the deep continuity that has characterized Griffa’s painting since 1968, and on the other, the vitality and ever-evolving possibilities arising from an attitude of attentiveness, openness, and freedom from any formal constraint.
