In mid-December 2017, Simon Starling visited Giorgio’s studio to take a series of photographs with his 8x10’’ large-format camera. He was accompanied by photographer Karl Isakson, who assisted him and documented the visit digitally.
The result was a series of black-and-white images by Starling, six of which were published—together with a portrait of Giorgio taken by Isakson—in the visual essay Tools, featured in the March 2018 issue of the British magazine Frieze.
The video documents the backstage of a single photograph: from the initial phases of study and preparation, to the exploration of light and exposure, through to the moment of the large-format shot and the subsequent digital capture of the entire photographic set.
